Phoenix from the ashes

BROADACRES - On 17 May, money went up in flames when a section of the Broadacres Lifestyle Centre was gutted by fire.

Five months on, and it’s business as usual for some of the stores effected by the blaze.

Grey Wolf Spur reopened their doors on 17 October, and already business is starting to thrive after shutting their doors for some months.

According to Spur Steak Ranches operations manager Haydn Bouwer, the branch had to re-do most of their ceilings due to the fire damage.

The fire began on the second floor, which was above the store, and water damage while the flames were doused caused further damage to the structural integrity and wiring of the store.

“Up to 99 percent of the ceiling was replaced,” Bouwer said.

The Spur family proved to be invaluable. After the fire, most of the Grey Wolf Spur staff members were absorbed by surrounding branches, and nearly all returned when the store opened shop again.

Justine Russell of the branch said they were lucky that no one was hurt in the blaze.

Regulars and word of mouth ensured customers started to trickle in after the extended closure for refurbishment.

“Many of our customers were devastated by the news of the great fire that consumed Grey Wolf Spur. We were too. However, we are back, sparkling new and better,” Bouwer said.

“The children’s play area, and family atmosphere of the store, is part and parcel to the refurbishments of the centre,” he added.

During its first week of opening the branch already hosted a shadow evening where school pupils job-shadowed staff. A portion of the take-in was then donated to the relevant schools.
