Support Juno, the brown hyena

PAULSHOF - FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre helped to campaign for the funding of a satellite collar for Juno, the brown hyena.

The nine-month-old animal captured the imaginations of Johannesburg residents late September when it was found roaming the streets of the city during peak hour traffic.

FreeMe, with the help of Johannesburg City Parks, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and hyena specialist Dr Brian Kuhn rescued the animal that had supposedly escaped from the Kloofendal nature reserve in Roodepoort.

Kuhn runs a research project, Urban Hyena Research Project. The aim of the project is to establish the presence of hyenas living near suburban areas which he does by setting up camera traps around the periphery of these areas.

The next step will be to capture these animals and fit them with a satellite collar to track their movements. Juno is one of the hyenas that will be tracked.

The price of a collar and software is about R50 000.
