Police station bogged down in waste

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale police are used to protecting the community from crime but a sewerage spill within the station has left officers with a grimy problem on their doorstep.

Colonel Tinus Swart from Douglasdale police station said the sewerage spill was not a once-off issue and that the station dealt with spills like this at least once a month.

He said, “The surrounding area, which is full of complexes, blocks up the sewer and the waste then overflows inside the station.”

Colonel Swart said the problem had been reported to Johannesburg Water on numerous occasions to no avail.

“A sewerage spill is disgusting and very unhygienic. Members of the community who come to the station have to step over it and some even end up stepping in the waste. This community deserves better than that.”

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, said that when the spill was reported the entity did not have sufficient information regarding where the spill was.

She said, “There was no indication that it was at the Douglasdale Police Station, therefore the team could not locate the fault. We have now escalated the query to the depot for action.”
