Upcoming e-waste collection day for Sunninghill
SUNNINGHILL - There will be an e-waste collection day on 5 October from 10am until 2pm at Chilli Lane Shopping Centre, Sunninghill.
According to Stuart Gower-Jackson of the engineering and environmental consulting firm, Jeffares and Green, e-waste constitutes any unwanted electrical or electronic equipment such as computers, TVs, VCRs and DVDs, as well as consumer electronics like kettles, printers, cellphones and fax machines.
Gower-Jackson explained that due to the numerous chemical elements and heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium contained in most electric and electronic goods, any resulting e-waste can be hazardous and toxic, causing serious health and environmental pollution problems if not handled responsibly. Hazardous components from mismanaged e-waste can contaminate soil, water and air if unsafely disposed of.
He added, “E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in South Africa.”
All e-waste received during the collection will be refurbished, repaired, dismantled or safely disposed of and handled according to integrated waste management principles and in the most environmentally safe manner.
