Cubs’ fun-filled cycle day

Cub Scouts from the Sandton District, along with their families, participated in a cycle day outing at Northern Farms from 7 to 8 September.

About 73 riders from the Bryanston, Morningside, Parkmore, Peter Place and River Trail groups took part.

Two basic routes of 6 km and 12 km were provided but for more skilled riders there was a longer route of 20 km.

Event organiser Craig Hudson said, “It provides an opportunity for parents to have fun with their children whilst experiencing the wonderful network of cycling trails that have been laid out on the farm.”

After the ride there was also an opportunity for the Cubs to complete their cycling badges.

To earn this badge, Cubs had to clean and oil their bicycles, mend a puncture correctly and demonstrate proficiency in riding a bicycle.

The Cub programme caters for boys and girls from the ages of 7 to 11 and provides adventurous outdoor based activities aimed at developing character and self-confidence.

Once a Cub turns 11, they then join a Scout Troop, where a more advanced programme of leadership development is provided to help young people achieve their full potential.
