Minister must scrap e-tolls or hold her tongue

NEW kid on the transport block, Dipuo Peters, is just like the rest of the ANC government lot.

On 17 September the recently-appointed Transport Minister sang the same old, and now out-of-tune, e-toll song.

Peters said that although the date had not yet been confirmed, the implementation of the controversial system was imminent.

This despite the fact that the Supreme Court of Appeal will hear a challenge to the multi-billion rand blunder towards the end of September.

President Jacob Zuma has also yet to sign the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, or ‘e-toll Bill’, into law.

There is a widespread belief that Zuma will not sign the legislation before the general election in 2014 – as this might risk the ANC losing control of Gauteng to the Democratic Alliance. The DA’s Premier candidate, Mmusi Maimane, has indicated he would scrap e-tolling should he be elected.

Peters must put a sock in it until she announces the scrapping of e-tolling. Everyone is tired of the constant ‘we are ready to implement e-tolls’ refrain.
