Misinformation about ‘hijacking’ in Sunninghill

Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association had to reassure residents after a notice was sent out falsely informing them of a hijacking in the area.

Linda Gildenhuys of Sunninghill Community Security said, “A managing agent from one of the complexes in the area sent out a warning informing residents to be wary of hijackings at all complexes in Sunninghill, as there had recently been a hijacking at the entrance of a prominent complex.”

Gildenhuys added, “These were sweeping statements that were made and would have panicked the residents when really there is no reason for people to be frightened. The ‘hijacking’ was actually a robbery at the entrance to a complex. The victim had been followed from Kyalami and the perpetrators took her expensive jewellery and cellphone – not her car.”

Gildenhuys assured residents that all crime updates in the area are made public.

She said, “I attend security meetings with the Sandton police where crime statistics are discussed. We make this information available to our residents. When a person publishes sweeping statements and unverified rumours they are undermining the work done by the ratepayers association and the police. We also don’t want people living in a state of fear because of rumours.”
