New Rea Vaya route opens

JOBURG - The Rea Vaya route to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park will open on 14 October.

Students, workers and residents will now be able to travel from Soweto to Melville, Auckland Park, Parktown and the Joburg CBD, through Noordegesig, New Canada, Pennyville, Bosmont, Coronationville, Newclare, Westbury and Westdene.

City spokesperson Virgil James said the new services would use 134 new buses.
“The introduction of the Rea Vaya smart card is another innovation that commuters can use to pay for travel easily and safely,” he said.
James said the implementation of the Rea Vaya would continue with the Phase 1C plan that included the construction of three larger scale multi-modal interchanges in Sandton, Westgate and Pan Africa in Alexandra. This will enable passengers to utilise Gautrain, Metro rail, Metrobus, mini bus and metered taxi modes.
As the construction of dedicated bus routes continued, James said there would be a significant upgrading of roads and pathways for cycling and walking, especially in Alexandra, Wynberg, Marlboro and the Sandton CBD.
