Taxi strike leaves Diepsloot commuters stranded

Residents of Diepsloot were having to hitchhike or walk long distances to work because taxi violence had put a stop to their only means of transport in and out of the township.

Fourways resident, Bonny van Vuuren was surprised when her domestic worker, who preferred not to be named, told her that she and her daughter had been forced to hitchhike to work.

Van Vuuren’s domestic worker said, “There are no taxis running at the moment and we are forced to walk or hitchhike to work. There is no other transport in and out of Diepsloot except for the taxis. The rumour is that two rival taxi associations are fighting. Living in Diepsloot is so dangerous because of the taxi violence, just the other day a man was shot near my house. People are saying it happened because of the war between the taxi associations.”

Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela of the Diepsloot police said, “We can confirm that an adult male was shot and killed in Diepsloot ext 1. We are investigating the case, but it is believed to be related to the taxi strike that has left commuters in Diepsloot stranded.”
