As reported in Fourways Review, week ending 30 August, Convict gets additional 22 years, the prisoner Andries Simango, who escaped from Johannesburg Central Prison and went on a robbery spree in the Douglasdale police precinct, had been identified as a former escaped convict using an alias.
He was tracked down in prison after being arrested for assault under another name. When police identified Simango another 22 years were added to his sentence for charges of rape and robbery during his post-prison crime spree.
The story has become even more bizarre, now that another 15 years were added after the criminal was again identified for terrorising a family in Bloubosrand during his escape from prison.
He successfully robbed a house in the suburb and made way with household goods valued at R70 000.
That time he was armed, and he fired shots when threatening his victims in the Randburg suburb.
Attempted murder was added to his sentence, which already included assault, rape and robbery. He was serving two life sentences before his escape.
