David Foley and City Parks are teaming up to create an improved park in Beverley, a community located in Ward 94. Currently, residents of Beverley must drive approximately 4 km to Lonehill Park to enjoy the benefits of green space. This partnership aims to change that by providing Beverley with its very own park.\

The creation of this park will not only provide a convenient green space for the community, but it will also create a safe place for residents to enjoy fresh air and birdlife. Parks are known to positively impact mental health, and the ability for Beverley residents to access a nearby park will undoubtedly improve their well-being.

David Foley, Ward 94 councillor, said, “Before I was voted in as the councillor in 2016, I was very active on the Ward Committee for Ward 94 in the community development portfolio. It was there that I saw this open area, which was municipal land serving no real purpose. The residents of Beverley would need to drive to Lonehill Park, which is about 4 km away, and since Beverley was developing, it needed its own park.

“We still have some work to do, including kerbing on the road, paving the pedestrian walkway, and creating a parking area with eco-bricks to ensure limited water runoff. Gardens will then be established inside and outside to enhance their beauty. The idea is to keep it natural, with more trees to be planted in the next six months to attract even more birdlife and other small animals like mongoose.”

According to Foley, the park will also provide a place for residents to go for a walk, encouraging a more active lifestyle, which is crucial for maintaining good physical health. Walking in nature also provides a sense of calm and tranquillity, making it an excellent activity for those looking to unwind after a long day.

The creation of this park is a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents of Beverley. It is a testament to the power of collaboration between community members and government entities. By working together, David Foley and City Parks can create a space that will benefit the community for years to come.

Resident Mike Hardy-Brown, said, “It has been great to see the open area opposite Villa la Tana developed through the efforts of Councillor Dave Foley. The park development has turned out to be a wonderful open area for families to enjoy and a safe place for children to play. The safety of slides and swings has been enhanced with a rubberised material surrounding the play equipment, and the park maintenance has been good. The new paved parking area makes visitor parking a pleasure, and once it is all finished, these projects will add wonderful value to the Beverley Area. Well done, Dave Foley. Keep up the good work.”

City Parks Region A manager, Joseph Mbulaheni Ndou said, “This was inspired because of the development taking place in the area. This park will encourage kids’ activity, help build safer neighbourhoods, slow down water runoff, decrease pollution, and promotes healthy living exercising and social cohesion.

“We request that the community look after the park to prevent illegal dumping and damage to park infrastructure.

“Parks are essential in preserving ecological functions as they protect the biodiversity of plants, animals and the environment. The value of urban green spaces is increased through strategic design and implementation.

“Parks serve as places of healthy living and social harmony for communities that have limited recreation facilities, and we need to vigilantly guard against these spaces being taken over by undesirable elements by ensuring that families come together regularly, as a whole unit to use parks.
“Communities are encouraged to report any vandalism or theft of park infrastructure to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.”
