Douglasdale Police Station and Chrysalis Academy came together to teach learners about safety and child protection. The event, held on May 24, included demonstrations from the SAPS mounted and K9 units.

The event was focused on important safety measures and how learners can protect themselves from potentially dangerous situations. SAPS specialised units showcased their services to the learners, highlighting the crucial role they play in ensuring the safety and security of the community.

This collaborative effort between the police station and the academy resulted in a fun and educational experience for the learners. Learners had the opportunity to find out about the important work of law enforcement and the measures they can take to stay safe.

Chune Stucke, principal of Chrysalis Academy, said, “We wanted the children to understand that the police are not to be feared; they are there to help us. Some of the children might become police officers, and we actually had a few express their interest in a policing career. This event allowed them to see the profession in action. Many people have a negative image of the police, associating them with laziness and untrustworthiness. This event served as a way to introduce the positive side of police officers.”

One learner, Axel Quisser, said, “I learned that we should always be nice, help others, and never hurt people. We must obey the law.”

Quisser added, “This day was important to me because I learned about the law and the importance of following the rules in South Africa.”

Douglasdale spokesperson Captain Mpho Tshetlhane stated, “As the police, we are mandated to ensure the safety and security of the community, including children. School Safety is one of our programmes, where we teach children about crime in schools and communities. We came here to teach them about safety and thought it would be fitting to celebrate Africa Day together and educate them about animals they love and the importance of animals in the police field.”
