Every year on May 12, many countries around the world celebrate what is called ‘International Nurses’ Day’. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has marked this day as a celebratory day for the nursing profession since 1965, and this year’s theme was ‘Our nurses. Our future’. May 12 also coincides with the birth of Florence Nightingale – dubbed the founder of modern-day nursing, the world also uses this day to celebrate her contributions to the nursing profession.

Pamela Naidu, nursing manager at Lifecare Fourways, took time to chat with us. Asked about the importance of International Nurses’ Day, Naidoo said “It is a day set aside to celebrate the dedication, compassion, kindness, and the compassion that nurses give in their selfless journey daily. The effort and sacrifices they make undoubtedly deserve the heartiest ‘thank you’ and deserve acknowledgement and respect.” Naidoo further explained the joys and downsides of working as a nurse. “A nurse is the one who cares for a person they have never met before. Nurses are the ones who open the eyes of a newborn baby and gently close the eyes of a dying person.”

Gauteng Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, alongside National Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, visited the Pholosong Regional Hospital to express the government’s appreciation for the nursing profession and to commemorate the contribution nurses in the country and across the globe make to improve quality of life and people’s dignity.
