Jukskei Park cyclist rides from Musina to Cape Town for school shoes

Resident embarks on 3 000km cycle across South Africa for a good cause.

This is one you may not have heard of before: A man is cycling the length of South Africa to raise funds for school shoes made of recycled plastic.

Jukskei Park resident Vusi Sindane left Beit Bridge in Musina, Limpopo, on April 13 and is busy with a 3 000km ride all the way down to Green Point, Cape Town. He has not set a deadline for arrival and has made slight changes to his route as he goes but expects to arrive either May 21 or 22.

Vusi Sindane expects to complete the 3 000km around May 21 or 22.

All this is to raise donations for the shoes that can be donated for R100 a pair. As of May 9, nearly 500 shoes have been donated while Sindane had travelled 2 239km – more than two-thirds of the total distance.

Vusi is a former corporate executive, software engineer and entrepreneur. He is also a husband of 10 years, a dad to six children and an active citizen.

So far Vusi Sindane has raised enough money for nearly 500 pairs of school shoes. Here he reaches Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, where Nelson Mandela was captured before he went on trial and sent to Robben Island.

He said 10 000 pairs of school shoes sounds like a lot but the need in South Africa is great. “There are 10 million children in our country who walk to school every single day,” he said. “Many of those children live in the remote areas of our country. They live in small towns and rural villages, and they don’t have school shoes at all. So something you take for granted… is a privilege that they don’t have.”
