Eighteen-year-old triathlete wins again at annual triathlon event at Steyn City

The annual triathlon at Steyn City is a sold-out affair.

A young triathlete made it two wins in two at the recent triathlon at Steyn City.

Shaun Wolfaardt (18) entered the triathlon last year, where he also took first place. This year, despite a few technical issues in the bike leg of the race, he did it again.
Cornwall Hill College learner Shaun said, “I’m feeling good about it [the win]. I had a different strategy for what happened. I had a few technical difficulties [similar to penalties] on the bike and had to close the last three minutes in on the run which is quite tough, but other than that I achieved what I wanted to achieve.

“The most physically challenging part of the race for sure was the run. It started getting quite hot towards the end of the day. Even the cycling got quite hot as well. At the end of the day, the run is where the legs are finished, and you’ve just got to push through.”
Adriaan Myburgh and Alan Gordon placed second and third respectively.

There was nothing but praise for Adriaan with whom Shaun trains. “I’ve been racing with Adriaan for a long time, and training with him for the last couple of years now. He’s a teammate and is like family to me. I’ve got so much respect for him as well.”
Future races for Shaun include the Africa Cup triathlon in Maselspoort in Bloemfontein, and the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza, and the young triathlete hopes for great results at these events.
