Fourways hockey players among national representatives to take part in Indoor Hockey World Cup

With the arrival of the Indoor Hockey World Cup in Pretoria, two local hockey players who have made names for themselves in the indoor scene will feature in the tournament.

With the start of the Indoor Hockey World Cup set to take place on February 5 in Pretoria, two local players are set to take part in the historical event.

Fourways High School alumna Robyn Johnson and Beaulieu College alumnus Aiden Tun have been called up to represent their country in the upcoming world cup for the women’s and men’s teams respectively.

With 58 caps to her name, Johnson shared her feelings of excitement and honour at being named in the national squad for the tournament.
“It is something that I have wanted to achieve in my hockey career and I have worked hard towards achieving it. Indoor has been a stepping stone for me in many ways in terms of my outdoor hockey career and I am so grateful for that,” she said.

The South African women are fresh off a series against Ireland where they beat the visitors 2–0 in a six-match series. Johnson said the team’s preparation for the tournament, which would take place outside of Europe for the first time, had been going well.

“In 2021 and 2022, we were already preparing for the world cup as it was meant to be last year in Belgium which got cancelled due to Covid-19. There are always things to work on and improve as individuals and as a team. We have a training camp in January to tweak finer details before the world cup starts.”
“Hosting an indoor World Cup is going to be really special and for fans and aspiring hockey players to watch the best in the world compete is going to be exciting. Hopefully, this will help grow indoor more. It is also really special having friends and family in the stands supporting us.”
