Ward 115 residents and organisations celebrated by councillor

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe facilitated a prize giving ceremony that celebrated entrants who volunteered to fix up their community and provide water-saving ideas.

Ward 115 community members were applauded by councillor Mark van der Merwe for their efforts to assist the community and city.

The councillor previously organised a competition in the ward for residents to take part in the Fix Up Your Pavement competition in order to get community members to beautify the pavements and walkways by their houses. The top three winners and an honourable mention received various prizes for their efforts.
The recent Fix Up Your Community expanded in terms of how community members could revamp and beautify their community within the ward.

“There were a lot of people who took part. It wasn’t for one’s own personal gain, as people were to fix up their property and then select a charity you can donate to,” he said.
Participants could also win a prize for providing the best water-saving tip following the city’s ongoing water-shedding crisis.
A number of residents attended the prize-giving as the competition presented a few different categories. Yonus Kaka was one of the winners for the best community upgrade and won R2 000. He chose Lonehill-based Daily Bread Organisation as the recipient charity for the prize.

Started by Charmaine McGinley, Daily Bread Organisation assists with feeding various impoverished communities and assisting the youth in education and finding safety.
Jukskei Park Community Forum member and resident Murray van Zyl alongside Peter Clarke had also given suggestions on how to save water in their homes.
“This competition ran for a month as we were going through the water crisis. It was where you could give ideas on how you could solve the water crisis. All the suggestions came through and we had Murray [van Zyl] come out on top,” he said.

Clarke’s suggestion was so impressive to Van der Merwe, that it may be suggested to the council as a way forward in saving water.
“Peter [Clarke]’s idea, which has still got to be taken to the council, I thought was brilliant. The idea is that we know what the average usage of water should be. So, the idea was if the residents’ average daily monthly usage was over what it should be, there should be some notification sent to the resident,” he said.
Van Zyl won R1 000, and Clarke won half a lamb donated by Donker Draai Farm and facilitated by Ockert Cameron from Blue Sage Couriers.
