VOX POP: Why is it important to keep the Braamfontein Spruit clean?

Locals in the Paulshof area expressed their views on why keeping the Braamfontein Spruit is important, either for society or for animal life.

KYLAH MCCREEDY: Rivers are an important environment for animals and fish to survive. If the spruit and rivers are not clean, the species living here would die out. Our citizens need to ensure that we keep these spaces protected and clean for all our animals.

Paulshof residents and community members came together with several sponsors to lend a hand in cleaning up their portion of the Braamfontein Spruit for World Clean-Up Day and All Spruits Day on September 17.

The volunteers took the time to talk about the importance of keeping the spruit clean.

This is what they had to say…

FRANCES JANDRELL: It’s always good to make sure you help nature. It has always been there for people, and if we’re not here for it then there won’t be an equal balance. The world would definitely decay a little bit.
FABRIZIO SAFAK: It’s important because you need to keep everything healthy. You want the space to look beautiful and not prevent people from coming to the river because of how dirty it is. People want to come to something clean, and you also help the world.
TESSA CHARSLEY: It gets disgustingly dirty from people littering upriver, and it all comes down here. There are so many animals that live in this ecosystem, and it makes it vitally important for us to clean it up. It’s a beautiful area with all the plant vegetation.
