A local preschool’s learners celebrated the grandparents in their lives with a number of activities on September 9.
Junior Colleges Gardens learners in Fourways had special guests join them for the Grandparents Day morning filled with singing and flower planting. Grandparents of the learners joined them in planting various flowers in the school’s garden.
Principal Bianca Durrant said the day was a success thanks to the scores of grandparents who attended the morning’s events. She added that having a planting activity like this for the learners gives them a sense of responsibility at school as they will look after the plants at the school.
“A lot of our grandparents play a big role in the lives of our little ones and have been with them from when they were a baby up until now. It’s a day where we and our little ones can show appreciation to them and what role they play in their lives,” she said.
“We enjoy having this day in September. Grandparents come with a lot of wisdom and experience, and with that comes a lot of expertise in planting. We love that because they can come to the school, enjoy a planting activity with their little ones. They will have a few their grandparents at the school.”
Durrant said with the school’s break-in events due to Covid restrictions, it is easy to forget how many family members, including grandparents will join in the day for the learners. “We had a few learners whose grandparents couldn’t make it today, so those learners still took part in the planting activities with the teachers and teachers’ assistants.
“What is nice is that we are a close-knit community, a lot of parents are friends with each other so they have their little ones plant with their grandparents.”
