Fourways High School learner is called up to the Lions U15 rugby squad

Tyler Maclennan, a Grade 9 learner at Fourways High School has high hopes after being called up in the Golden Lions U15 rugby team.

A local high school rugby player has been called up to the Lions U15 side.

Grade 9 learner at Fourways High School Tyler Maclennan said he was pleased to hear the news of his call-up to the rugby team. Tyler had previously been announced in the U13 Lions side but Covid-19 reared its ugly head and prevented sports from taking place.

He said he had an interest in the sport since a young age. “My dad and I used to watch rugby together on TV which got me interested in the game. My primary school introduced rugby when I was in Grade 4 and I was hooked. I enjoy athletics, watching rugby and UFC,” he said.

Tyler plays for the Diggers Rugby Club in Randburg where he was selected for interprovincial trials and chosen in the final squad for the Lions U15 team.
“I’m very chuffed and thrilled with myself as I know this is a very big stepping stone for me. I have been training with my dad since the age of seven at Pound for Pound gym doing boxing, wrestling and MMA.

“I’m very grateful to my coaches at Diggers Rugby Club and my coach at Fourways, Thank you to the Golden Lions for the opportunity. A lot of people doubted my ability, but look at me now.”
Tyler concluded that looking to the future in his career this was just the start and hoped to become a professional player.
