Unity College hosts annual sports day with running and walking races galore
On your marks, get set, go as young Unity College learners enjoy their annual sports day.
A local special-needs school had their learners take part in a fun sports day that saw cheers and screams of excitement.
Unity College hosted their annual sports day which saw the learners take part in walking, running, relay races and a tug-o-war challenge on August 20.
Sports coordinator Shadreck Chidakwa said the day’s events were successful. “We usually also have table tennis but we didn’t do it this year. Since we are a special-needs school, we always make sure that whatever the mainstream society is doing, we follow that as well. All of our sporting activities are guided by the Special Olympics South Africa,” he said.
“I’d say we had a good turnout, but not a 100% turnout. It would have been more hectic and more exciting with a better turnout. I think the weather announcement played a part in that, as they are vulnerable to certain illnesses so parents were very cautious there.”
The morning started with coaches’ and athletes’ oaths and saw the junior learners in their first walking races. Some learners were accompanied by their parents and guardians in both sprinting and walking races. The intermediate learners had their chance to shine in both races, where families and friends cheered loudly for all who took part.
Learners who placed first, second or third in each race took home a medal for their memories of a fun day.
In conjunction with the sports day, the school also celebrated their 32nd birthday with doughnuts for the learners.
Chidakwa concluded that he can see a number of the learners becoming top athletes in the future based on how they ran in the morning.
