Beaulieu College alumnus shoots for the stars in her hockey career
Beaulieu College alumnus and current University of Johannesburg hockey player, Kaylim Bowers De Lima has high aspirations in her hockey-playing career which include playing for South Africa.
A Beaulieu College alumna is making strides on the hockey field.
Now playing for the University of Johannesburg in the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association outdoor league, Kaylim Bowers De Lima (25) began her hockey career at the age of 10 and made her first district team two years later.
De Lima is not only continuing and showing her sporting prowess on the hockey field but has also achieved several accolades in soccer and rugby.
“In my first year, I attained a soccer scholarship, moved universities and obtained a hockey bursary where one of the rugby coaches noticed me from touch rugby and scouted me to play rugby.
“It’s on the rugby field where I obtained my injury while playing for Raider Rugby Union in 2020. This I would’ve called [being in my prime] on the rugby field. At that time, I had already played provincial touch rugby and full contact, Varsity Sport, USSA [University Sports South Africa] and charitable tournaments,” she told Fourways Review.
In addition to representing her country in outdoor hockey, sharing her passion and love for the game is a goal the UJ player strives for.
“In the next couple of years, I’d like to be coaching clinics not only nationally but internationally. I’ve had the help of some brilliant mentors so I’m looking forward to seeing where the journey takes me.
“Just before Covid, I was in the best shape of my life and sadly I was injured and couldn’t play for some time and athletes know how difficult it is to work your way back from there and even try and exceed that.”
De Lima had received a hockey bursary to Beaulieu College during her high school time and had paid tribute to the late hockey director of the school, Allistar Fredericks. She also thanked her mentors, friends and family for the support over the years.
“Being a part of the Beaulieu alumni is always going to be a part of me. That’s where my hockey started. It was never easy waking up to morning sessions and doing pool sessions but it was so worth it.”
