Suspect arrested for possession of illegal firearm in Diepsloot

The suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Diepsloot police’s relentless efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the township had some success on the evening of August 7.

A 36-year-old man was arrested in Ext 3 for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Crime Prevention Unit members were patrolling when they allegedly heard a gunshot and immediately headed in the direction of where the sound came from.

According to the spokesperson for Diepsloot Police Station Captain Tinyiko Mathebula, while the officers were still trying to ascertain where the gunshot came from, they saw a group of men standing on the street. The officers searched the men and the suspect was found in possession of a firearm. When asked to present a licence for the gun he failed to do so.

“The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on August 10,” said Mathebula.

Diepsloot Police Station Commander Brigadier Koena Moichela commended the officers’ vigilance in recovering the illegal firearm and urged the officers to partner with the community to curb the circulation of illegal firearms in the community.
