National Children and Violence Trust hosts choral music competition to commemorate Women’s Day

National Children and Violence Trust chairperson encouraged members of the community to report cases of gender-based violence to the police.

A Fourways-based non-profit organisation National Children and Violence Trust (NCVT) hosted its annual choral music competition at Diepsloot Community Hall on August 9 to commemorate Women’s Day and raise awareness about gender-based violence.

Dozens of local choral music groups brought their best singing voices to battle for first place.

At the end of the competition, Diepsloot-based Fountain Melodies GC Choir was crowned champions of this year’s competition and took home a R3 000 cash prize and a trophy.

Speaking at the event, the chairperson of the organisation and former chairperson of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, Thoko-Mkhwanazi Xaluva urged young people to join the fight against gender-based violence in their communities.

“The NCVT decided to commemorate Women’s Day through a music competition to bring young people together and raise awareness about the scourge of gender-based violence. We do believe that if we speak to young people, our country will be able to win its battle against GBV.”

Xaluva said the organisation provided community-based psychosocial services and empowerment programmes to children, women and families in underserved areas in Gauteng and urged members of the community to utilise their services.

“We have volunteers of the organisation stationed in different police stations to help guide and counsel victims of gender-based violence. We encourage members of the community to report cases of GBV to the police and speak to our volunteers stationed in different police stations.”
