Local councillor calls on residents to join the war against illegal dumping in Lonehill

Local ward councillor said illegal dumpers put environment and water species in Jukskei River at risk

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy has expressed his displeasure with the mushrooming of illegal dump sites in different areas of his ward.

Reddy said the new illegal dump site along Main Road just before Jukskei River in Lonehill was posing a threat to people’s health, the environment and water species.

He said illegal dumpers used trucks and bakkies to dump garbage in the open land next to a residential complex.

“These people have the audacity to dump garbage on this site even in daylight. The residents association has made efforts to put barriers at the entrance of this site but they [dumpers] continued using a different one.”

Reddy said he had reported the matter to Metro police and Pikitup authorities to help stop the illegal dumping in the area and bring the perpetrators to book.

He urged residents to take pictures of the vehicles and the registration numbers used by dumpers and report them to Metro police and police.

“This open space has become a hotspot for illegal dumping. We’ve reported this to the authorities and JMDP. We call upon all members of the community to report incidents of illegal dumping in their respective neighbourhood to help us put an end to it.”

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said those found illegally dumping could be issued with a fine ranging between R1 500 and R5 000 under the Waste Management By-Laws and Public Open Spaces By-Laws.

“The JMPD has a dedicated team within the By-law Management Unit which was established to combat illegal dumping. This team has been deployed to monitor and put a stop to illegal dumpers and when caught red-handed or traced they are issued a fine.”

He urged residents to report illegal dumpers using the Anti-Illegal Dumping Hotline 082 779 1361.
