Monthly Sector 2 Community Police Forum meeting addresses crime in the area

The monthly Community Police Forum of Sector 2, which includes Bryanston, had officials and residents discussing how to decrease and prevent crime in certain areas.

Members of the Sector 2 Community Police Forum (CPF) invited community members and various police officials to their monthly meeting to address concerns in the area.

The meeting at St Michael’s Church in Bryanston on August 4 was attended by about 45 people. The chairperson of the Sector 2 CPF Hayden Hamlet introduced the key speakers.

Crime analyst of the Sandton Police Station, Captain Pulame Manzini shared important crime updates from various parts of the Sandton and Fourways area for July. According to Manzini, burglaries in residential areas mainly occurred on a Monday from 06:00 to 08:59.

She added criminals often observed the daily routines of their victims who leave for work at specific times. Police officials informed participants that visible policing had already been implemented in the affected areas.

The commander of Sector 2, Sergeant Lungi Mbatha, urged residents to assist police with crime prevention by being the eyes and ears of the community. Mbatha suggested that having a ‘domestic worker watch programme’ would drastically decrease crime in Paulshof and Bryanston.

During a Q and A session, residents highlighted concerns regarding noise levels, air pollution, presence of public indecency, an influx of displaced people and violence.

Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford and Ward 93’s Vino Reddy assisted police officials in answering some of the questions.

“I thank the residents for engaging with us today. There were a lot of questions [raised] and we realised that officials need to share more information regarding legislation on why we do certain things so that they understand the system. Sharing, educating and working together will eradicate crime,” said the head of visible policing of the Sandton Police Station Colonel Cain Sibitane.
