Nelson Mandela celebrated through sport

The tournament was hosted to remind the youth of the importance of Mandela Day.

Teams showed off their soccer skills in a six-a-side tournament on July 17 at Rustic Indoor Soccer Fields in Fourways.

The tournament was originally meant to be attended by four teams, but only two teams were able to make it. The teams that took part were split into four teams, Kya Sands FC team A and B, and Great Minds FC team A and B.

Sphamandla Masuku, one of the organisers of the tournament, said it was hosted to remind the youth of the importance of Mandela Day and what Mandela had done for the country.

He added that the tournament was intended to keep the boys off the streets as both of the teams come from communities with high rates s drug and alcohol abuse. “Playing football is a good distraction for the boys to keep their minds off these social ills,” said Masuku. He also hoped to host more tournaments in the future.

In the end, it was Great Minds FC team B that walked away as the winners of the tournament.
