Netball girls get menstrual cups
Netball players involved with Youth Alive Sports Project in Diepsloot received a donation of menstrual cups in order to continue the alleviation of period poverty.
Two netball teams of Diepsloot West Secondary School received menstrual cups from a local foundation as part of a Mandela Day initiative on July 16.
The A Million Girls Foundation was founded by Quincy Molope in 2021, and it aims to ensure one million girls do not miss school due to being on their period and not having sanitary products.
“Unlike disposable pads and tampons, a single menstrual cup lasts up to 10 years making sure girls stay in school and attain the education they need to make a success of their lives.
“According to research conducted by the University of Stellenbosch, an estimated 3.7 million girls cannot afford sanitary products and 30% miss school when on their period,” she said.
The foundation had also hosted a Mentor Day at Khensani’s Collection in Diepsloot where separate mentor sessions for boys and girls were held on July 9. Lesego Taule mentored the girls’ session, while the boys’ session was mentored by the foundation’s chairperson Molope Molope, youth life coach Thabo Magano affectionately known as Coach T, and Nic Ingel of Emet Gyms.
“The Mentor Day went so well that the mentors committed to structuring a programme that they will regularly contribute to on a regular basis. Ingle also committed to donating equipment to turn the makeshift gym at Khensani’s Collection into a powerlifting gym,” said the foundation’s founder.
