A King’s College and Preparatory learner has been nominated in the upcoming Children of the Year Awards for her book published earlier this year.
Siyavuya Mabece (10) wrote and published Enough! Stop Bullying! with the aim of tackling the issue of bullying and the consequences it has on children. She has been nominated in Stacey Fru Foundation’s fifth annual Children of the Year Awards in the Education and Skills Development category.
With her book being published this year, she has since visited many schools in Johannesburg and attended book fairs. The book is currently on sale at Exclusive Books nationally.
On the news of her nomination, she felt very excited to be named among other children making a difference.
“It is an honour which I never expected. I didn’t even know there were events such as Children’s Awards. This means a lot of young kids are becoming change agents and are doing amazing things to contribute to society.
“I’m very relieved that my book has gotten a lot of attention because my intention when I wrote the book was exactly that, to reach as many children and parents as possible. This book is not only for kids, but it’s also for adults too, to educate themselves on a lot of things that are affecting their children,” she said.
The Stacey Fru Foundation was founded by 12-year-old philanthropist Stacey Fru. She is the youngest ambassador for Save the Children and BrandSA Play-Your-Part and also has published a number of award-winning books. Her foundation aims to aid in the donation of items such as books, computers, clothing and food to children and adults alike.
With this being Siyavuya’s first book, she has plans to continue writing about topical issues in society.
“I want to write stories or books which people can relate to. I believe when a message is written by a child, it is more genuine and other kids are able to understand the message clearly. The next book is definitely coming.
“This is the knowledge children have been looking for. It is so amazing when children in schools ask questions and almost all the answers are in the book,” she told Fourways Review.
The awards are set to take place in November.
