Ward 94 hosts a public meeting to discuss safety issues in and around Fourways area

Ward 94 councillor said residents raised a number of safety issues including lack of by-law enforcement, illegal taxi ranks and motorists who pay no regard to traffic rules.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said the city’s Department of Public Safety and JMPD has committed to addressing safety concerns raised by Fourways residents.

This was after Foley hosted a public meeting at Indaba Hotel which was also attended by MMC of Public Safety David Tembe and JMPD management on June 8.

He said residents raised a number of safety issues including lack of by-law enforcement, illegal taxi ranks and motorists who pay no regard to traffic rules and illegal dumping.

“I scheduled this public meeting based on the fact that residents were complaining that Fourways central is starting to look like an informal settlement. Motorists’ behaviour, especially the taxi drivers, and infrastructure vandalism were some of the issues that residents were most concerned about.”

Foley said JMPD promised to increase a number of visible officers in the area to deal with transport matters and behaviour of taxi drivers who disregard rules on the road during peak hours.

“The MMC promised that JMPD vehicles and officers will be placed at strategic points in different parts of Fourways. JMPD point duty officers will also attend to traffic intersections with traffic lights that are working from 06:00 to 09:00 – and from 15:00 to 18:00 weekdays.”

Foley urged residents and members of the public to report infrastructure vandalism to JMPD.
