Local NPO strives to help the disadvantaged

Daily bread, which was previously a homeless shelter now has a variety of leafy foods in their garden that they use to feed several communities.

Daily Bread, a non-profit organisation based in Fourways feeds about 1 000 needy people every month according to founder Charmaine McGinley.
Their premises used to be a homeless shelter but it closed down in 2012.

According to McGinley, Fourways and surrounding areas do not have permanent homeless shelters. “They [displaced people] do come to us and we do find them shelters, but the problem is that where the shelters are, they are far. There’s in Alex, they are full, and they are full because the need is so great.”
She added Fourways was seen as an affluent area and so people thought the area did not need a homeless shelter.

Daily Bread grows it’s own vegetables to feed these displaced people and also to provide for food kitchens in surrounding areas.

She said with winter already here and no permanent homeless shelters in the area, people who have been displaced from their homes and have no roof over their heads during the cold nights would be severely affected.
