City’s chair of chairs praises Daily Bread non-profit organisation for their good job to help the poor

Colleen Makhubele has commended Daily Bread.Org non-profit organisation for the good work

The chair of chairs in the City of Johannesburg Colleen Makhubele has commended Daily Bread.Org non-profit organisation for the good work they do to fight hunger in poor communities.

Speaking at the official opening of a new community food garden at the organisation’s premises in Leaping Frog Shopping centre on May 28, Makhubele said community food gardens were very important because they spoke to food security and social cohesion.

“We are truly excited about this community driven initiative and as the City of Johannesburg, we want to partner with the sponsors here today to spread this initiative across the city where communities can come enjoy the garden and get food and socialise around a positive and constructive initiative.”

She added the 1996 World Summit on food security declared that food should not be used as an instrument for political and economic pressure.

“The main global policy to reduce hunger and poverty is in the Sustainable Development Goals. Initiatives of this nature can help us achieve the goal of food security, improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.”

Chairperson and founder of Daily Bread Charmaine McGinley said the garden would help bring the community together, promote social cohesion and teach people about sustainability.

“Our aim as an organisation is to help the poor and give back to the community. This garden will help us grow fruits and vegetables to feed the needy,” she said.

McGinley said members of the community could enjoy a walk in a stunning garden and also visit their second-hand shop that is open to the public from Monday to Saturday between 08:00 to 13:00.
