Learners’ musical production aims to raise awareness about social challenges faced by youngsters

The production director said the musical production drew on music from Broadway Musicals such as Everybody is talking about Jamie, The Prom and others.

Reddam House Helderfontein staged musical production of New World in San Quentin Theatre at Prison Break Market from May 12 to 14.

The audience were captivated by the incredible talent of each learner and the professionalism with which they performed.

Musical production director and head of performing art at the school, Shaun Young said the production was aimed at creating awareness about daily challenges faced by young people in schools and in society.

He said the musical production drew on music from Broadway Musicals such as Everybody is talking about Jamie, The Prom and others.

“The musical production is a celebration of acceptance of an individual and touches on very relevant topics such as social anxiety, peer pressure, bullying, sexuality and so many more challenges that the youth of today face.”

He added that the production celebrated the ‘outsider’ in all of us and brought everyone together, breaking social barriers and celebrating unity.

Justin Peringuey, a Grade 9 learner who played the role of Jamie in the musical production said he enjoyed playing the role.

“When we did audition for the production, I wasn’t aware that I will be playing the role of Jamie who is gay. I enjoyed telling his story although I am not gay but I believe that the awareness was created and message conveyed,” Justin said.
