Bike-a-Thon drives point of road safety for pre-school learners

Young pre-school learners spent the morning riding their tricycles and scooters while learning the basics of road safety.

Road safety was the topic of the day at Junior Colleges Sunninghill on April 29 for a Bike-a-Thon.

The young learners were taught the importance of road signs and markings by the teachers, and then later got to embark on a mini road course with their tricycles and scooters. Some parents were also present to assist their children with riding along the mini road track.

At the end of their cycling, the learners received medals they got to take home to remind them of their fun day.
Acting principal at the school Mel Ramdial said teaching road safety to the learners went extremely well and that the youngsters did not want to stop riding their tricycles.

“The learners were really excited to learn about road safety today. It is also a fundraising initiative we do for the school. We as teachers made the road signs and gave a talk to the learners.
“It is really nice to be able to host events again. As a parent, you get to see what the learners get up to at the school. What was surprising about today is that a number of the learners already knew more or less about some of the road signs,” she said.

Throughout the last two years, the school has been impacted by Covid-19 and not being able to host their various events and activities.
Ramdial said there is great relief in being able to have events again at the school, and there will be many more occasions in the next while.
