Fourways runners train for long distance running event

Community members are ready to run a distance for an upcoming race with other Run/Walk for Life branches across the country taking part.

A local running club started their training for an upcoming running event set to take place at a national level.

Run/Walk for Life Fourways will take part in the Never Have I Ever challenge and are getting participants ready.
The challenge is a four-week long training programme that helps participants train for finishing their first 5km, 10km, 15km, 21km and 42km races. For each distance, a training programme and mentor is provided who will pace the group and give advice along the way.

Beth Hamman, branch manager for the Fourways club said this was the second year the challenge was taking place and that there was high enthusiasm from participants who were not even deterred by the incessant rain.
“The challenge runs from the beginning of April when the training starts and finishes at the end of April. Run/Walk for Life thought it would be an excellent way to encourage people to attempt a distance that they have never run or walked before,” she said.

“What is particularly exciting about this challenge is that irrespective of your level of fitness, there will be a distance for you to do. We want to get people exercising and to show that with short but consistent training, a goal that is thought to be impossible to achieve can be reached.
“The main purpose of this event is participation so there are no cut-off times for participants barring the 42km. It is not intended as a competitive event, but as an event designed to get people to challenge themselves surrounded by support and fun.”
