A 106-year-old resident said she felt important and honoured to receive a special visit from the MMC of Housing.

The MMC for Housing in the City of Johannesburg Mlungisi Mabaso fulfilled his promise to celebrate the birthday of 106-year-old Riverside View resident Mukumela Ndou on April 21.

During a title deeds handover ceremony on March 30, Mabaso had vowed to return and pay homage to celebrate the birthday of the elderly Joburg resident.

Accompanied by Ward 96 councillor Rufus Maswazi, Mabaso presented a birthday cake, fruit and vegetables to Ndou.

“When we issued titled deeds here last month, we learnt that Gogo Ndou had just celebrated her 106th birthday. I thought it was befitting to celebrate this milestone with her because very few people are blessed to live beyond 100 years these days,” said Mabaso.

Born and bred in Venda, Limpopo and moving to Johannesburg in the 80s, Ndou who can still walk unaided has five children, more than 20 grandchildren and more than 70 great-grandchildren.

She believed by eating fruit and vegetables, and staying away from things such as alcohol helped her to reach 106 years of age.

She said she felt important and honoured to receive a special visit from the MMC of Housing.

“I thought he was joking when he promised to come back and celebrate my birth with me. It’s unlikely to find someone who keeps his promise, especially from top government officials. I am very happy that he came to celebrate my birthday in my house,” she said.
