The morning on April 23 was filled with families interacting with teachers, while learners went on a scavenger hunt around the campus to find out various facts about the school and staff members. There were also a number of activities, like an obstacle course and a tug-of-war battle.
Principal Jeanine Kerr said it is great to host events at the school, especially after Covid-19 regulations put a temporary halt to organised fun days.

She also mentioned the importance of events like these not only for the learners but also for the parents who might feel isolated from the rest of society since their children are not accepted by all. “It’s very important to build community at any school. Since we are a special-needs school, it is even more important. Today is an opportunity for families to be with other families and know they and their child are accepted.

“It is also for the rest of the family to come and see what we do. One of the things we do is teach social skills to children who are here so that we can help them be a part of society. ”

Kerr was pleased with the turnout of the event from both parents and learners. “This is an opportunity to really get together and for our parents to see our school and experience other things here. The obstacle course we have the learners do also has parental involvement in them joining in the course,” she concluded.
