High school rugby players get a taste of Golden Lions trials

FOURWAYS – The Golden Lions High School Rugby Association started their first trials to discover hidden rugby talent in smaller schools in the B-league.

A number of rugby teams of various schools came to Fourways High School on March 16 for Golden Lions High School Rugby Association team trials.

Schools in the B-league were encouraged to take part in the trials in which players in the U16 and U18 age groups would be selected for a team to play in future games.
These schools included Greenside, Bryanston, Fourways, Rand Park and Roosevelt high schools, and De La Salle, Trinityhouse, Beaulieu and Dainfern college teams.
Head of rugby at Fourways Daryll Gates said, “These are schools in the B-league that never get a chance to go through and play in the Gauteng trials in Alberton. We are trying to identify some talent here who don’t get a chance to go through automatically.

“Smaller schools like Roosevelt, Beaulieu and De La Salle are given an opportunity today to showcase their talent. From all the schools, we will select players to make one team to play as a squad. This is basically just to give everyone a fair chance.”

Bryanston rugby coach Wian van Wyk said he had high hopes for his team in the trials.
“It’s still very early in the season so a victory would be fantastic but just a good all-round game just to see that things are falling into place and what we have been coaching is working.”
Looking to the rest of the rugby season, Van Wyk said he was hopeful there would be no interruptions due to Covid-19 restrictions as he was looking forward to derby days.
