Dainfern knitting group to stitch hard this year

DAINFERN – Since starting in 2020, close to 1 000 blankets have been made by a knitting group as a contribution to the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative.

Since forming in September 2020, a group of avid knitters in Dainfern are hoping to continue their success in making blankets for people and communities in need.

Dainfern resident Colleen Teklenburg formed the Dainfern Knitwits after the founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela, Carolyn Steyn, asked her to be an ambassador in 2020.
Teklenburg then put a post online, asking like-minded knitters to join her in making a difference. “The challenge was put out to make as many green and gold blankets for the Massive Bokke Blanket to celebrate South Africa winning the Rugby World Cup. There were many wonderful ladies from Dainfern, whom I had never met before all volunteer to crochet blankets for the challenge,” she said.

The group became stitched together in a short space of time, and have made contributed over 1 000 blankets to the 67 Blankets cause while creating lifelong friendships.
Teklenburg said there are a number of plans this year for the Dainfern Knitwits, with January 27 marking eight years since the 67 Blankets initiative launched. “The Dainfern Knitwits together with 67 Blankets are currently working on the Rainbow Nation Blankets of Hope. This challenge is in partnership with Gift of the Givers to make bright colourful blankets.

“These blankets will be laid out at Steyn City School on May 11 to pay tribute to the true heroes of today, our frontline workers. The blankets will then be distributed by Gift of the Givers to people in need.”
Teklenburg said the Knitwits are always welcoming new members who have a lot of time on their hands and want to do their part in making a difference to those in need. Alternatively, wool donations are also appreciated.
