Grade 1 waits for eager HeronBridge learners

FOURWAYS – An electric buzz was in the air as many young learners at HeronBridge College start their Grade 1 year.

HeronBridge College welcomed their new Grade 1 learners on their first day of big school on January 13.

The Grade 2 to 12 learners started their first day of the academic year on January 12, with the younger children have been going back to the classrooms later in the week to make each their first day back a special one.
Junior Prep deputy head Gina Brunsden said the day has been filled with lots of excitement from both staff and learners.

“Exciting is a word that sums up today. We’ve had a lot of relationship-building with new and existing parents with learners who were in Grade R here last year.

“We keep remembering last year when we couldn’t be on-site for the learners’ first day, so there is a lot of excitement among the teachers to welcome the children today. We’ve had to keep in mind certain things with regard to Covid, but it is business as usual,” she said.

She also mentioned the classrooms are able to have daily equipment used again since the worst of Covid passing through, such as various readers, carpets and reading corners.
Albeit having all these items back, she said there are still a number of precautions used to keep the little ones safe and sanitised.

Parents Venesia and Dawid van den Berg walked their son to his classroom for his first day of Grade 1. Both said that there was a massive aura of enthusiasm for the big day.

“We actually got the days wrong and though Grade 1s started a day earlier. Our son was so disappointed that he had to wait another day before school starts, but he was absolutely excited to come to school today,” said mom Venesia.
