Local boxer encourages youngsters to consider boxing as sport

FOURWAYS– Wolmarans said she was hoping to secure more domestic and international fights next year.

Fourways-based boxer, personal trainer and SA Women’s Junior Welterweight champion, Hedda Wolmarans has encouraged young people, especially young girls, to consider taking up boxing although it was considered a male-dominated sport.

Wolmarans said women’s boxing was growing globally and many female boxers around the world have made names for themselves in the sport.

“When I grew up, I played tennis as my dedicated sport until I got interested in boxing. I started doing boxing as something I did for fitness purposes. In 2011, I joined an amateur club when I was doing my engineering studies at Wits University and during that time I won [boxing] championships,” she said.

In 2015, Wolmarans took up boxing professionally although her father was against it in the beginning

She has since fought six fights locally and won all of them, however, this year Wolmarans struggled to secure enough fights.

Wolmarans said she was hoping to secure more domestic and international fights next year.

“I didn’t have many fights this year and the other one that was supposed to take place last month in Johannesburg was cancelled at the eleventh hour because the promoter didn’t have sufficient money to host the fight. I’m optimistic that next year will be a good year and I will secure enough fights,” Wolmarans added.

She also teaches basic boxing skills at The Yard Athletic in Fourways and gave advice to youngsters.
“If you want to realise your dream, you must believe in yourself work hard and never allow minor things to divert your focus. If you want to be a boxer, you need to prepare yourself mentally and psychologically while training every day.”
