Teddy bear drive in full swing

MAGALIESSIG – Community members have donated used teddy bears to Cedar Lakes resident Jeanette Prescott-Budd in order to make a difference in many children in the greater Fourways area.

A Cedar Lakes resident recently started a teddy bear drive within her community that has since extended to the Magaliessig community.

Resident Jeanette Prescott-Budd also collects toys, books and sweets for the less fortunate
“I just started asking people to drop off teddy bears at my house. The Cedar Lakes community is incredibly generous and kind and the bears just started pouring in.

“A lot of bears needed a little TLC, that is where my little 84-year-old mom stepped in, fixing and sprucing up some of the more bedraggled bears. It’s simply amazing how many teddy bears people have lying around which just need a little love and care before they are rehomed,” she said.

She added she had researched how many orphaned children lived in and around the Fourways area, and decided to make a difference and give the children Christmas presents.

The teddies are washed, repaired and packed to be donated to underprivileged children. Since reaching out to the community, Prescott-Budd was introduced to Daily Bread Organisation’s founder, Charmaine McGinley who will also help in the distribution of the teddies.

“I am friends with Megon Schutte from StandUnited and she introduced me to the wonderful work Charmaine McGinley at Daily Bread does every day. I needed an outlet for the teddy bear package distribution and Charmaine’s charity is a perfect fit,” she said.

Prescott-Budd said on December 2, the teddy bear packages will given out at Daily Bread’s Christmas party for children in and around the Fourways area. She thanked all those who have donated to the teddy bear drive.
“We are going to carry on collecting and distributing throughout the year, as many children just need a hug and a teddy’s hug.

“Jeanette would sincerely like to thank everyone at Cedar Lakes who has donated to this little cause, your generosity is unsurpassed.”
