BENMORE – The three suspects robbed a firearm, cell phone and assaulted a security guard.

SAPS Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni has welcomed the arrest of three people following protest action in Benmore on July 28.

The three suspects, who were suspected of being behind the protest, stole a firearm, cell phone and assaulted a security guard.

According to provincial spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele, the firearm was reported to the police right after it was stolen. “The three suspects were arrested after the incident on July 28 in Alexandra, one suspect [was] found in possession of the robbed firearm and two others were arrested for assaulting the security guard,” said Makhubele.

The suspects appeared before the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on July 30.

He applauded the success of the police. “This success which comes as a result of swift and decisive action by police and security should send a stern message to criminals that police will come after them,” said Major General Mthombeni.

He concluded, “Such acts of lawlessness will not be left unpunished. We will ensure that the perpetrators are caught and get to face the full might of the law.”

It was alleged that the protest action was the result of non-payment of salaries.
