Residents of Fourways Estate embark on a street clean-up campaign to celebrate Mandela Day

FOURWAYS– Thurston said residents heeded a last minute call to take part in the clean-up campaign.

Many residents of Fourways Estate, young and old, participated in this year’s Mandela Day celebration by cleaning up their neighbourhood and cutting overgrown grass along Inchanga Road.

Community activist and resident of Fourways Estate, Raymond Thurston said residents heeded a last minute call to take part in the clean-up campaign.

Thurston said, “It was such a blessing and inspiration that, at very short notice, fellow residents, some with their children, gathered on the morning of Mandela Day to undertake a litter and tree overgrowth clean-up campaign along Inchanga Road and surroundings.”

He added, “We collected more than 50 bags of litter and removed rubble that was left along the road by municipal workers when fixing the road some time ago. It was a great community initiative which proved that all is possible if the community works together.”

Thurston said communities needed to work together to preserve and keep their neighbourhoods clean.

“We need to teach our children about what first democratic president, Nelson Mandela stood for and believed in.

He concluded, “We need to adopt an attitude of doing things by ourselves and stop waiting on government to do it for us. Mandela Day must be observed every day.

“We must strive to lend a helping hand to those with the little we have.”
