Bryanston scout receives the prestigious Springbok badge

BRYANSTON – To earn his badge, Jonathan Pienaar had to plan, organise and lead a team of scouts in completing a number of special projects.

Members of the 1st Bryanston Scout troop continue to outdo themselves.

Scout member Jonathan Pienaar was recently awarded with the prestigious Springbok Scout badge, the highest level of achievement for a youth member of the Scout Movement. Jonathan was joined by 30 other Scouts from all across the province who were recognised for their hard work and commitment.

According to the Gary Pienaar of the 1st Bryanston Scout troop, to earn his badge, Jonathan had to plan, organise and lead a team of Scouts in completing a number of special projects.

“One of the highlights was leading a three-day hike to climb Thabana Ntlenyana in the Drakensberg, the highest peak in Africa south of Kilimanjaro, which was then followed by an exhilarating mountain bike ride down Sani Pass,” said Pienaar.

Even though there was a lot of hard work involved, Jonathan’s Springbok journey had taught him an array of new life skills and the importance of being of service to the community.
“With the initial Covid-19 lockdown preventing gatherings and face-to-face activities, his community service project had to be substantially adapted.

With the help of his fellow Scouts, he created a series of children’s stories, posted on the internet, to entertain young children whose parents were busy working during the lockdown.”

The former Fourways High School learner is currently studying engineering at Wits University.
