Community member’s tip-off leads to arrest

DIEPSLOOT – A tip-off from community members helped police arrest a suspect.

A 27-year-old male suspect appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 May on charges of business burglary and possession of stolen cell phones.

According to Captain Tinyiko Mathebula, the spokesperson for the Diepsloot Police Station, the suspect allegedly broke into a spaza shop in Diepsloot in the early hours of

11 May.

“He allegedly stole grocery items and two cell phones from the shop. A community member allegedly saw the suspect carrying grocery items and he was later seen selling those items.”

Mathebula said that a tip-off from a community member assisted the police to trace the suspect and he was arrested at his address on 12 May.

He allegedly confessed to the police that he had stolen the cell phones.

“Community members are urged to desist from buying stolen goods as this motivates criminals to commit crime,” said Mathebula.

The suspect was remanded in custody after his court appearance.
