St Peter’s Prep celebrates Maths Day with activities

PAULSHOF – The junior phase girls at St Peter’s Girls Prep took part in activities involving sweet treats to learn the importance of maths.

Junior phase learners at St Peter’s Girls Prep celebrated World Maths Day on 5 May with a number of different activities.

Grade 1 teacher and lead teacher in numeracy, Sheena Steyn said the theme of the day was party planning, with the song Banana Banana Meatballs by Blazer Fresh playing to help expose the girls to patterning.

“This initiative was celebrated to help the girls understand that maths is a part of our everyday lives and not merely a subject at school, taught in isolation. The day culminated in the girls using critical thinking to reflect on how maths is needed in everything we do,” she said.

The Grade 0s problem-solved whilst making hot chocolate by estimating, counting and measuring ingredients.

“They estimated how many marshmallows were in a packet, counted to check how close they were, then the marshmallows were shared out evenly. They measured teaspoons of hot chocolate powder, followed instructions and enjoyed their treat.”

Grade 1 learners planned Snow White’s tea party – they created invitations, made a seating plan for guests and built their own 3D teacups.

Grade 2 learners organised their own birthday party where they too created invitations and thought of good party games they would need to make. “The girls explored 3D shapes by making a cube cupcake holder and then they got to decorate their own cupcake.”
