Members of the Fourways community shared their opinions on the importance of press freedom as World Press Freedom Day is globally celebrated on 3 May.
CHARMAINE McGINLEY: Media freedom in South Africa is not only important but is also a vital organ of our society. It enables the media to execute its role as a watchdog and promote transparency in government and private institutions’ actions.SPHELELE ZONDO: Media freedom is important because media and journalists are the eyes and the voice of the masses, especially ordinary people. The media should be given a space to do its job without interference from the powerful.SINA BAHRAMI: It’s important because we need to hold the people in power accountable. Without the press, there is no reason to change and hold people accountable for their actions.
