Operation with Midrand SPCA works to shut down illegal abattoir

MIDRAND – Midrand SPCA shut down and are still monitoring illegal abattoirs and hawkers' sites in the area.

Midrand SPCA addressed an issue regarding an illegal abattoir and site where chickens were being sold in the Midrand area earlier this month.

General manager of the animal welfare organisation in Midrand, Pam Pretorius said their inspectors and Ekhuruleni Metro police visited the area on 3 March to inspect the site. She said, “While attending this inspection, we came across an illegal abattoir in our area… Not only is it illegal to operate an abattoir without the required licence, but it is also a health and safety concern for the general public.

“Our biggest concern, however, was the inhumane and cruel manner in which these poor chickens were being handled and treated. The chickens were being slaughtered, cleaned and cooked on this site,” she said. The organisation shut down the site and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued warnings and notices to the people involved.

“The matter is currently being dealt with by the correct authorities and our team will continue to monitor this situation to ensure that these chickens don’t endure unnecessary suffering.”

She concluded that they were awaiting feedback from the agriculture department and the health department. If you have concerns about similar situations, you can report these to the Midrand SPCA on 011 265 9935 or the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department on 011 375 5911.
