Lonehill Residents Association environment team on a mission to keep neighbourhood clean

LONEHILL– "We encourage residents to join the Enviro Fund to ensure the safety and beauty of the neighbourhood so that living in Lonehill remains a lifestyle investment for property owners and residents."

In pursuit of clean and greener public spaces, the Lonehill Residents Association environment team, also known as the ‘Green Team’, maintains and improves the environment in the neighbourhood.

Environment manager Nadeem Abrahams said after 13 years of its existence the Green Team has managed to keep its mandate and work tirelessly to ensure that the neighbourhood looks clean every day.

An Enviro Fund was created in 2007 in order to help fund the team’s work.

“Our Green Team comprises of eight members. They are responsible for the upkeep of 14 formal and informal public parks, the Lonehill Koppie Nature Reserve, seven accessible servitudes including a few road verges and gated Eskom servitudes within the Greater Lonehill area,” he said.

“They keep our streets swept, pick up fallen branches and [remove] illegal signs and posters as part of their weekly tasks.”

Abrahams added that the team faces daily environmental challenges that sometimes requires expert advice and guidance before the team execute its duties. “We do have access to a large array of experts that work for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, which includes horticulturists, an ecologist and water quality specialist to name a few that we work very closely with.

“Our team is currently struggling to rid our Lonehill Park dam of two types of aquatic alien invasive weeds. We are also facing a huge issue of the rapid damage occurring to our streambanks due to water erosion and foot traffic soil erosion in our parks and on our road verges.

“It would be great if more residents would contribute towards our Enviro Fund initiative so that we can employ more staff and acquire more resources to address these environmental issues in the neighbourhood.”
